WELL DONE TO THE 2025
RUNNERS-UP

Some of the comments from the judging panel are shared below

  • QUEER OF THE YEAR - CHARLIE BARKER (he/him)

    NORTHGATE HIGH SCHOOL

“Charlie's contributions to his local community and the way in which he has represented the voice of local LGBTQ+ youth exemplifies our QSA values of community, respect and self-expression. For someone at high school to be doing this activism and advocacy is outstanding and well worthy of recognition.”

  • ACTIVIST OF THE YEAR - NOAH ALFRED PANTANO (he/him)

    UNIVERSITY OF ESSEX STUDENTS’ UNION

“Noah has drawn on their own experience to ensure that visibility is emphasised and encouraged. Drawing on their peers and local networks, they have shown that activism is at the very heart of change”

  • ALLY OF THE YEAR - JANE DONACHY (she/her)

    UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS LONDON

“Jane's commitment to making the university a safe, inclusive and welcoming place for LGBTQ+ students and staff is shown in her unwavering support of queer initiatives and groups. Giving space and support for those initiatives and the people that created them the opportunity to flourish.

Her allyship goes beyond the university too, into the wider community, showing her support for the London Lighthouse ,a centre for people living with HIV and aids.“

  • CHARITY INITIATIVE OF THE YEAR - HIV TESTING WEEK CAMPAIGN

    SEXPRESSION:UK

“HIV is still incredibly stigmatised, but thanks to the incredible initiative taken by student volunteers, HIV has been able to be spoken about more openly across the country.”

  • COMMUNITY INITIATIVE OF THE YEAR - THE SAFE SPACE CARD

    UNIVERSITY OF ESSEX STUDENTS’ UNION

“Even against visible haters they still pressed on and received support from the wider university for it. It's a scheme that all universities and colleges should adopt.”

  • ROLE MODEL OF THE YEAR: BUSINESS LEADER - ROELAND van der HEIDEN (he/him)

    ASTRAZENECA

“Roeland is a role model through their sustained work at both a grass-roots and strategic level and their impact is evidenced and apparent through the growth of the network but also the new partnerships forged to boost everyone. His work is clearly focussed on supporting young people within the business and community and the work with Cambridge Pride shows a wider understanding of impact outside the business.”

  • ROLE MODEL OF THE YEAR: EDUCATION - ALFONSO PEZZELLA (he/him)

    MIDDLESEX UNIVERSITY LONDON

“As a lecturer Alfonso is openly supportive of LGBTQ+ people and helps ensure that students feel ‘valued, understood and encouraged to thrive’. He has also provided individual personal support to ensure that a student undergoing gender reassignment was able to remain in education. Internationally, Alfonso’s work has ‘contributed significantly to shaping more inclusive healthcare practices for LGBTQ+ patients.”

  • ROLE MODEL OF THE YEAR: STUDENT - SCHOOL/COLLEGE - LEALAN HOLLIS (she/her)

    SHREWSBURY COLLEGES GROUP

“Lealan is obviously having an impact on others around her just by being her authentic self but also by supporting and mentoring others on similar journeys to hers. Lealan's propensity to challenge bigoted behaviour in an unapologetic manner and her fortitude and magnitude and being described as a "force of nature.”

  • ROLE MODEL OF THE YEAR: STUDENT - UNIVERSITY - OFFA SINFREY (she/her)

    UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON

“As a ‘Muslim, Malaysian, brown-skinned trans woman’ studying on a Malaysian government-sponsored scheme, Offa has faced many barriers and challenges to living as her authentic self. However, she is a ‘positive role model for the LGBTQ+ community’ at UCL inspiring others by her commitment to being visible and confident. A true example of a role model.'“

  • SCHOOL/COLLEGE OF THE YEAR - ARCHBISHOP SENTAMU ACADEMY

    HULL

“They are doing well with the Pride group as there is real change afoot through challenging the use of homophobic and transphobic language.”

  • UNIVERSITY OF THE YEAR - UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS LONDON
