  • UNISON MIDDLESEX UNIVERSITY BRANCH

UNISON Middlesex University Branch is proud to partner with the Queer Student Awards 2026, celebrating students, staff, allies and change makers who are building safer, more inclusive education communities.

We are the Middlesex University Branch of UNISON, one of the UK’s largest trade unions, representing 1.3 million members across the public services. At Middlesex University London, our branch represents hundreds of colleagues working in professional services and within the Students’ Union.

LGBT+ equality is central to UNISON’s work. Nationally, UNISON fights discrimination and prejudice in the workplace on behalf of our members, through local, regional and national LGBT+ self-organised groups. These groups campaign for equality, support members experiencing discrimination, negotiate with employers, and provide practical advice and legal information.

UNISON’s LGBT+ organising is member-led and rooted in solidarity. LGBT+ members meet and organise at branch, regional and national level, with dedicated structures that ensure the voices of bi+, trans, non-binary, gender diverse, Black and disabled LGBT+ members are represented within the union.

In Greater London, UNISON’s LGBT+ group campaigns against workplace discrimination and prejudice, supports LGBT+ members, and has a visible presence at Pride events across the region — taking messages of equality, solidarity and defence of public services into the wider LGBT+ community.

At Middlesex, our branch works with colleagues locally, regionally and nationally to advance LGBT+ rights and inclusion. This reflects the University’s wider commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, including its staff networks and active staff and student LGBT+ communities.

We are especially delighted that Christiana Rose (she/her) is a finalist in the Ally of the Year category at the Queer Student Awards 2026, recognised for championing visibility, supporting students and staff, and helping create spaces where queer people feel heard, valued and celebrated.

Christiana — alongside our Branch LGBT+ Officer, Ant Babajee (he/him) — will be leading the Middlesex University group at Pride in London for a second year, continuing a proud tradition of trade union solidarity. Last year, they also marched alongside hundreds of trade union colleagues at London Trans+ Pride, standing together for trans rights, dignity and equality.
